Three important resonances
Tuners usually name a tone field by its fundamental, but the field is shaped so additional resonances support that pitch. Their exact balance depends on construction, tuning and how the note is struck.
Fundamental
The primary pitch used to name the tone field and the component a basic pitch display aims to follow.
Octave
A resonance near twice the fundamental frequency, contributing clarity and a brighter upper component.
Fifth
A related upper resonance that adds color and helps form the characteristic handpan voice.

Why a reading may jump an octave
The fundamental is not always the loudest component at every moment. During the attack, or with some microphone positions, the octave may dominate. A detector can then report D4 while the intended fundamental is D3.
HandpanTune filters low-level input, checks pitch confidence and requires a cluster of similar frames before changing the main display. It also treats sudden octave-like and fifth-like jumps more cautiously. These safeguards reduce false changes but cannot separate every resonance in every recording environment.

What professional tuning examines
A professional tuner listens to the pitch and shape of each resonance, the stability of the tone field and its interaction with the shell and neighboring notes. Beat patterns, sustain and cross-talk can matter even when a fundamental appears close to its target.
